With many months in planning, the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives (MAC) joins forces with the Italian farmers union, Coldiretti, to explore how best members in Mississippi, Alabama, and even Louisiana can reimagine their family farms with the kind of multifunctionality that serves Italian farmers so well… especially regarding agritourism: the business model whereby farms invite consumers to the land to learn, experience, and spend time and money in ways that stretch the concept of agriculture: farm shops, farm stays, restaurants, horseback riding, bonfires, stargazing, and more.
The hospitality and inventiveness evident in Petal, Mississippi points towards a resilience that keeps families thriving on the land.
The commitment that MAC and Coldiretti made to engage in peer-to-peer learning is bearing fruit thanks to support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The limited gathering assembles practitioners from Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi together with Italian practitioners and advocates for multifunctional agriculture.
